Before you book

  • City tax: Amsterdam adds a tourist tax on top of the room rate (12.5% in 2026, rising in 2027). Booking sites often leave it out of the headline price.
  • Family rooms: Dutch rules cap how many people a room may hold, and many double rooms cannot take a cot. E-mail the hotel rather than relying on booking-site filters.
  • Cheaper luxury: five-star rates can halve between tulip season (April–May) and mid-January to mid-March.

Questions

What is the best area to stay in Amsterdam for Muslim travellers?

For a first visit, the Canal Ring or the Jordaan: everything is walkable and the Fatih Mosque is close by. For halal food on the doorstep, choose Oud-West or Oost (Javastraat). Families on a budget get the most space and halal choice in Nieuw-West.

Do hotels in Amsterdam offer halal breakfast?

Some do, mostly on request. Larger hotels can usually arrange eggs, fish, cheese and turkey or beef instead of pork. Ask the hotel by e-mail before you book, and ask which pastries are made with butter only.

Which area should Muslim families avoid?

The Red Light District (De Wallen), east of Damrak between Centraal and Nieuwmarkt. It is safe, but its evening atmosphere does not suit family travel. One canal further west the atmosphere changes completely.
