No Michelin-starred restaurant in Amsterdam is halal-certified. The way in is the pescatarian or vegetarian tasting menu, cooked without alcohol. Ciel Bleu at Hotel Okura, Flore at De L'Europe and Spectrum at the Waldorf Astoria handle this well when asked a week ahead. Yamazato serves fish-based kaiseki; discuss mirin and sake when booking.
Staying in an apartment? Shop on Javastraat in Oost or Kinkerstraat and Jan Evertsenstraat in West. Albert Heijn and Jumbo supermarkets carry growing halal-labelled ranges. Check Dutch sweets for gelatine; spekjes marshmallows are usually pork-based, and some older stroopwafel recipes use rundvet (beef fat).
Each listing carries one of four levels: Certified (we saw a valid certificate), Owner-confirmed (written confirmation that all meat is halal), Community-reported (Muslim-owned or locally trusted), or Check pending. We show the date of the last check and re-check listings every six months.
Some do. Many Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese places do not, while Indonesian and upscale restaurants often do. Each listing will state the alcohol policy once checked; until then, ask when booking.
No Michelin-starred restaurant in Amsterdam is halal-certified. Starred kitchens such as Ciel Bleu, Flore and Spectrum will usually prepare a pescatarian or vegetarian tasting menu without alcohol when asked a week in advance.
Two questions are enough: "Is all your meat halal?" and "Do you serve alcohol?" Dutch staff answer directly. For fine dining, write: "No alcohol used in the preparation of any course, and no pork or pork derivatives, including gelatine."
